After finishing a long, happy, peaceful vacation in the middle of the week, I knew that I would have to return to the stresses of work and see what was happening in the “real world”. Little did I know that this week would include some of the damnedest, most frustrating claims of racism and transparent use of racial wounds that we’ve ever seen. It isn’t the first time, nor will it be the last…but, it was increasingly frustrating to hear more liberal commentors divide the country by race. And worst of all, being able to do it by pointing the finger at conservatives and getting away with it.
I read a refreshing article from Prof. Thomas Sowell yesterday, that made me feel much better that there may just be an eventual end to these bogus claims. Fraudulent use of the race card has left Americans polarized on the issue of what is true racism. True institutional racism that should be fought against lays in the background as liberal extremists would prefer to use cases absent of racial bias or minor prejudices as their standard. As this becomes the standard, you can tell that Americans are becoming increasingly tired of being called racist just because they disagree with the far left, progressive agenda. And hopefully, as Prof. Sowell says in his article, “voters will wise up to race card fraud.”
After the Sherrod story began to gain traction in the media, many liberals tried to pin the whole thing on Andrew Breitbart’s Big Government website and Fox News as racial fear mongering by the Right in this country. Regardless of the fact that Shirley Sherrod was fired before Fox News aired anything regarding the video, liberal commentors are trying to deceive the American public into blaming Fox News. They are using the case to try to destroy a media outlet they don’t agree with…to try and make the story about them, even if they had nothing to do with the untimely and unwarranted dismissal.
The worst of these offenders is probably Rachel Maddow. She has used the story all week to attack Fox News. At least her MSNBC partner Keith Olbermann pointed the finger a bit at the Obama administration and the USDA in his pompous Special Comment on Wednesday night. Anyways, on Tuesday, Maddow deceivingly tried to tie events together to claim that Fox News was trying to divide the nation on racial lines. Her claims suggest that the Van Jones story, ACORN, New Black Panther case, and Shirley Sherrod were all schemes to ruse White Americans into fearing Black Americans. She is trying to lay the case that it’s all a strategy by conservative activists to scare white folk…and only the liberal elites that see beyond race (HA!) can tell. On the show, she commented:
What do the four major Fox News only stories of the Obama era have in common? The four major stories, pressed and pushed relentlessly on Fox, over and above the facts, as their own make up the news cycle you wish you had narrative that they want to pin on the Obama administration?…Van Jones, ACORN, the New Black Panthers, and Shirley Sherrod….This isn’t about racism, this isn’t a story about picking on black people. This is a story about political outcomes…a strategy to feel afraid of black people. To feel afraid of African-American people as if they are not fellow Americans, rather a threat to what white people have…This is a political strategy, advanced not by a news organization, but by political activists who use a cable channel as a political outlet and they are pros at this, there is no reason to expect them to stop doing stuff like this. Unless it stops working some day.
With all due respect to Dr. Maddow and the 20 minutes she must have spent piecing this puzzle together…BULLSHIT. Let’s look at this case by case:
- Van Jones: About a government-appointed official that is a self-admitted Communist, signed a 9/11 truther document, had documented past extreme activist activities, and supported the release of a police murderer.
- ACORN: A supposed bi-partisan publically funded organization, that was anything but – caught on tape showing people how to hide prostitution and avoid taxes. While also having several lawsuits for voter registration fraud.
- Black Panthers Lawsuit: Organization that is proud in its racism against whites… case of voter intimidation documented on tape thrown out by the Department of Justice before it even gets to court after it was initially tried civilly and the BPP never showed to court.
- Shirley Sherrod: A classic “gotcha” journalism effort by a conservative blogger against the NAACP, which last week was claiming the Tea Party was a movement of racists. When the tape is released, the NAACP and Obama administration overreact before doing their homework and they try to blame everyone else.
Maddow is doing exactly what she claims Fox News and the Right are doing, just from the opposite point of view. She is misconstruing the entire reasoning for each story to fit her ‘black vs white’ agenda. She and many members of the Left are the ones that can only see stories in black and white. As Prof. Sowell mentioned, some Obama supporters have tried to make any and all criticism regarding the President as racist. I don’t care if Van Jones celebrated Chanukah; his past should eliminate him from public office. As someone commented on Mediaite, “It is not racist to discuss their socialist backgrounds, their voter intimidation tactics, their inexperience, their willing participation to assist proclaimed pimps, their affiliations with terrorists, or Reverends who say outrageous things.” Skin color has nothing to do in any of these cases…if you are white and make the argument you are not a racist, and if you are black, like Prof. Sowell, you are not an Uncle Tom. You are a reasoned individual who is getting dragged into the muck by people using minority groups to further their agenda.
I can honestly look in a mirror and say that these stories don’t frighten me because of race, but because they outline a scarier Liberal agenda. The more light that is shown on the agenda, the more the majority of people disagree with it which is why the Left fights so hard to paint it as a racist argument. Race leaves everyone’s head hazy so the Left can balance the playing field and try to re-shape the debate.
They see the polls. They know people aren’t happy with deficit spending, bailouts, health care reform that doesn’t fix the problem, eventually raising taxes (it will have to happen to pay for things soon enough), creating an energy plan based on taxing what we currently need, suing States, ineptitude in handling foreign affairs, etc… Rather than doing what is necessary, they are playing to people’s emotions such as the race card with immigration/Tea Party disagreements and empathy for unemployment benefits (Note: I am not saying not to give the unemployed benefits, but the Democrats argued on purely emotion and to paint the Republicans as evil rather than finding a way to budget for it. So now we dig ourselves deeper in debt).
I started the week listening to the talking heads getting very frustrated on the direction the debate was headed. Prof. Sowell’s piece and hearing from other like-minded citizens made me realize though that the politics of the past are beginning to run thin. The more and more the Left cries “Wolf” in these cases, the less they are working to sway the national opinion. That might be the greatest sign of racial harmony.
