Recently I’ve been hearing this phrase a lot; the world is upside down. People are slowly catching on to the fact that things are un-like how they used to be. Political polarization mixed with outlandish irrationalities and head-shaking ignorance is becoming common place. But unfortunately many of these stories, which defy sound logic or objectivity, simply fall through the cracks of our 24/7 news cycle. In an attempt to document the patently outrageous, I have decided to start an ongoing series called, The United States of Absurdity. We will be documenting stories that we hope only represent the fringe of a fringe with sources and very short commentary. And as our upside down world slowly renders The Onion obsolete, at least they won’t be able to say that we’re all crazy. Let’s begin.
How bored are “Human Rights” groups in America? The Maine Human Rights Commission has asserted that “unlawful discrimination” is taking place in Maine public schools on a daily basis. Why? Because students who choose/wish to identify with another gender are not afforded the right to use their counterparts bathroom facilities, lockers rooms, and sports teams. That’s right, they believe a 15 year old male should be allowed to use the girl’s restroom or potentially play on a girl’s sports team if they want to identify as a female. Not only do they want to mandate special accommodations to “transgendered” individuals from pre-school to college, they would seek to punish those legally for non-compliance, including Christian and other Private schools. The Maine Human Rights Commission guidelines are so idiotic, that the Director of Diversity for the University of Maine had to send a seriously written letter addressing their concerns if said guidelines were implemented in Universities.
The NAACP takes issue with outer space. The National Association for the Advancement of Color People has apparently lost its collective mind. They have successfully put pressure on Hallmark to remove a three year old graduation card that they deemed racist for using the term “black holes.” Insisting that the racist card maker was referring to black women as racist hoes, Leon Jenkins and the Los Angeles NAACP has effectively proven to all fair-minded Americans that prior racial injustices have largely been eradicated. Unless you believe that taking an old graduation card, changing the words and its intended meaning and then crying racism does not trivialize the great work they and other civil rights groups have done to combat real racism and injustice.
PBS’s Tavis Smiley has officially lost his moral compass. In an interview with Ayaan Hirsi Ali, a Somali born writer and former member of the Dutch Parliament who criticizes Radical Islam for the terror its followers commit in the name of religion, Smiley engaged in a rebuttal virtually void of coherence and rational thought. Smiley says that there are more Christians who murder in the name of Christianity than there are Muslims, and then offers examples of post office bombings and Columbine…. He also said that Christians do that every single day in this US. Maybe I’m missing something here, but what in the hell is he talking about?
