On October 24, 2009, President Obama signed a proclamation declaring the 2009 H1N1 influenza pandemic a National Emergency to facilitate our ability to respond to the pandemic. This will give The US Department of Health and Human Services the ability to waive legal requirements that could otherwise limit the ability of our nation’s health care system to respond to the surge of patients.
Although the President is seemingly doing what he can to help Americans get their vaccinations shortages still exist. At a local high school in Stafford, Virginia, my wife spent two and a half hours in line to get our children their shots. The Centers for Disease Control (CDC) even began rationing vaccinations toward those with greatest risk. Still public anxiety has surged as swine flu sweeps across the country, while doctors and clinics are forced to turn away many people.
I am cautious blaming the administration with the current problem. Everything that I have read said they knew the problem was coming and they were addressing the problem accordingly. On Friday, David Axelrod gave a detailed explanation on the problems with the manufacturers causing the slow production of vaccines.
But then I heard on late Friday, The Pentagon will offer the H1N1 vaccination to detainees at the U.S. facility at Guantanamo Bay. That’s right, terrorist and mass murderers (some suspected) are going to receive vaccinations before children in the United States. The CDC reported that at least 114 children have died from swine flu complications since the spring. No matter, “Detainees at JTF Guantanamo are considered to be at higher risk and therefore they will be offered the H1N1 vaccination,” said Maj. Diana R. Haynie, a spokeswoman for Joint Task Force Guantanamo Bay.
Maybe I should have come to expect this type of decision from an administration that changes the name of “Global War on Terror” to “Oversees Contingency Operation” or “enemy combatants” to “persons” whom the president “has the authority to detain.” It bothers me that this President is trying to give terrorists (aka refugees), captured during war, the rights of American citizens, changes terminology policy to be more friendly to them, andHe questions the people who captured them. Now finally he will be vaccinating them to keep them healthy before children around the country get a chance at immunization. Where does it stop?
