Trying to muddle through the nonsense regarding the healthcare proposals coming out of Washington is a daunting task. Recently I have been reading some summaries of the current healthcare monstrosity. Unfortunately, the 1000 page plus healthcare bill is written in the form of legal mumbo jumbo that allows for as many interpretations as the Bible. Since figuring out exactly what was meant amid all the legalese in the healthcare bill is a near impossible task, I decided to take a look at the debate from a different point of view, as well as provide some helpful information. Here is the actual summary as prepared by the House, along with two other summaries, one from MSNBC and one from Washington Post.
I thought that maybe we can gauge the future affects of the healthcare proposal if we can understand the intent of the players in power who are pushing it. It’s no secret that President Obama favors a single payer universal system the likes of which they have in Canada. Although Linda Douglas, the communications director for the White House Health Reform Office posted this video last week, its clear that Obama has always been in favor of such a system. Other key leaders such as Barney Frank, John Conyers, and Nancy Pelosi favor a single payer system. On the other hand the public is quite divided, and support against the current bill, which does not mandate a single payer system but a public option, is clearly growing. So too is the skepticism of the American people as more are questioning why we should allow for a potential government takeover of a system highly regarded not only in the world, but amongst nearly 4/5th of the country who are satisfied with their current healthcare.
